Drainage & Blockages

From time to time we all get a blocked toilet, plug hole or drain. This is often a simple task for us, and we advise not to use bleach or any other DIY products. They usually make our job more difficult (and even dangerous) when customers combine chemicals and other products.

Preventing Blockages

There are a number of foodstuffs notorious for blocking kitchen sinks – rice, coffee granules and fat among them. Try where possible to scrape as much of that waste into the bin. When fat goes cold, it create quite a good blockage, and once mixed with other food items it is a real pain to clear out.

In the bathroom, make sure you’re removing as much hair from the drain trap after use and flushing through soap or toothpaste with plenty of water to prevent build-up.

Sometimes drains will need a good cleaning regardless, especially if they have become slow or there is a smell.

Larger/Extended Kitchens

Commercial kitchens often have lots of issues with fat, and usually these blockages are compounded by badly designed waste pipes, or waste pipes that are too long or have very little ‘fall.’ Water needs a decent angle to fall away, and leave a pipe clear, but often where kitchens have been extended or had alterations made, these waste pipes end up being extended way past the recommended length.
